As we discussed in a recent post, dated September 6th, household cleaning products can be dangerous, highly toxic, and even deadly to children and pets. Long term exposure can lead to a number of health issues including cancer. With a little effort, you can make your own healthy household cleaning products, often with simple ingredients you already have in your home.
A great all-purpose cleaner can be made with just two ingredients, baking soda and water. When you mix 4 tablespoons of baking soda in a quart of warm water, you will have the perfect cleaning product for countertops, appliances, inside the fridge and just about anything in the kitchen. This baking soda solution also acts as a deodorizer. Simply use a clean sponge and your kitchen will shine. For a little extra fragrance add a little essential oil, like lemon, rosemary, cinnamon or lavender.
Another all-purpose cleaner can be made with equal amounts of vinegar and water. Add some lemon and or lime rinds, rosemary sprigs or any other scented herbs or essential oils you like. Combine all the ingredients in a spray bottle, allow to sit for a few days and it’s ready to use. This cleaner is great on stains, freshens the laundry, and gives your house a fresh smell that isn’t harmful to humans or pets living in the house.
For cleaning glass, use 2 cups water, ½ cup vinegar, ¼ cup rubbing alcohol, and as an option, add couple drops of orange essential oil. This eco-friendly house cleaning recipe is great for windows and mirrors. Use in a spray bottle and paper towels.
Most people think that when a drain is clogged, the only solution is a caustic drain cleaner or an expensive plumber, but before you try those solutions, here’s an eco-friendly product that actually works. Just pour about a half a cup of baking soda into the drain that’s clogged, and then add a cup of vinegar. Give it about 30 minutes then flush the drain with boiling water. This can be safely used on sinks and toilets of all kinds.
A safe alternative to furniture polish is found in olive oil. Just mix a ½ cup of olive oil with 8 tablespoons of distilled white vinegar and several drops of lemon essential oil or fresh lemon juice. You can store this product in the refrigerator for weeks.
Easy, eco-friendly safe household cleaning product recipes can be easily found the internet. Using safe and inexpensive household products to clean your home will help keep your pets, children and the environment safe while saving you the expense of over-priced store-bought products.
When making your own household cleaning products be careful to never mix ammonia with chlorine bleach because when combined can produce toxic fumes.
