Commercial cleaning tools products can be expensive as well as hazardous to our family members and pets. Instead of buying these products, you may want to try some of these items you already have in your home.

Socks

Next time you lose a sock in the dryer, don’t throw the other one out. Instead, place them in with your cleaning supplies. Socks are a streak free method that can be used to clean all kinds of surfaces. Just put one on your hand to dust furniture, or clean your windows. You can use whatever cleaning product you prefer, or an eco-friendly product like vinegar and water. Just dampen the sock and you’ll be surprised how well they work.

Paint Brushes and Tooth Brushes

It’s pretty hard to get into all the nooks and crannies in our windowsills, keyboards and other tight spaces in our homes. Using an old toothbrush or paintbrush is the perfect solution. You can also use them to clean delicate and ornate picture frames and glass or ceramic objects in your home. Paintbrushes and toothbrushes are tools professional housekeepers use to remove scum around bathroom faucets too. If you want to go eco-friendly, just spray on a mixture of vinegar and water and you’re all set to get into those hard to reach areas.

Toothpaste

Toothpaste can clean chrome, shine sink fixtures, polish silverware and even clean jewelry.

Vinegar

Vinegar can clean chrome and remove soap and hard-water buildup on chrome fixtures. Place a paper towel or tissue over the stained surface and pour on some full-strength vinegar. Wait about 5 minutes and rinse.

Fabric Softener Sheets

Don’t toss out that used fabric softener sheets after they’ve gone through the dryer. They make excellent dust rags for furniture and non-plasma TV’s, computer screens as well as cell phone or tablet screens. Scented fabric sheets can be used inside of shoes, in cars or in drawers to eliminate odors and make them smell fresher.

Hair Dryer

If you’ve ever struggled to clean all the dust off of your house plants, try using a blow dryer set on low. This can help rid your home of dust related allergies.

Coffee Filters & Newspapers

Coffee filters or newspapers can be used instead of cloth to clean mirrors and windows, and easily absorb the wet streaks left on your windows as you clean them. Then are often more effective than paper towels and less expensive. Coffee filters can also help keep your microwave clean. When you place one over food you’re reheating, they will eliminate food from splattering all over the inside of the microwave.

Tissue and Baby Wipe Boxes

These items can help organize your home. Baby wipe boxes are great for holding small kitchen items, such as cork screws, vegetable peelers, napkin rings or cookie cutters. If you’re still using plastic grocery bags, stop, but if you do, an empty tissue box can be used to store them so they can at least be repurposed.
